The eye colour is determined by the presence of melanin pigment in our irises, i.e more the pigment, more dark would be the colour of the eye. There have been many babies who have been born with blue eyes which have then altered into brown. This happens as the production of melanin does not begin at birth. Eye’s colour changes once the development of this pigment starts. There is no presence of green or blue pigments in the eye. The opticians in Mauritius suggest that these lighter shades appear in the eye because of Rayleigh scattering. This is the effect of light which gets scattered in the layer of iris which is called stroma. This is the same reason as to why the sky appears to be blue.
Many family members do share the same colour of eyes but it is not possible to predict the child’s eyes. The probability of the colour of eye can be guessed but as there are different genes at play so it is possible that a brown eyed couple will have a blue eyed offspring and the vice versa is also true.
Prediction of the Eye Colour of your Child
There is one technical way of predicting the colour of eyes of a child by creating a graph called a Punnett square and by entering the colours of eyes of the parents. This graph can be used for charting the combinations of alleles which allows the parents to calculate the possibility of the eyes colour of the newborn. The condition in which the colour of your eyes is different in two eyes is called heterochromia. This condition is still somewhat mysterious.
