Age Related Macular Degeneration – Treatment Options
Anti-angiogenic drugs: These medications are injected into your eye by a Doctor. They stop the formation of new blood vessels and block the leaking from abnormal vessels that cause macular degeneration. There have been reports that some people have been able to regain their lost vision due to AMD. Follow-up is recommended for such treatment.
Photodynamic laser therapy: A two-step treatment which uses a light-sensitive drug to damage the abnormal blood vessels. A medication is injected into your bloodstream by a Doctor, it gets absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the eye. The next process involves laser which the Doctor shines into the eye to activate the drug, and it then damages the abnormal blood vessels.
Vitamins: There have been reports of benefits if you take a supplement formula that has vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper. According to the research, the risk of vision loss goes down for some people with intermediate to advanced dry AMD.
Researchers are always studying new ways to treat age-related macular degeneration. Some experimental methods are as follows:
Submacular surgery: A surgeon removes the abnormal blood vessels, scar tissue, or blood.
Retinal translocation: A procedure that destroys abnormal blood vessels in the eye that is directly under the center of the macula. That’s a spot that your doctor can’t safely get to with a laser beam. In a retinal translocation, the doctor rotates the macular center away from the abnormal blood vessels. Once the macular center is out of the way, he then treats the abnormal blood vessels with a laser.
