SEIKO Super Resistant Blue: How Do Blue Light Filters Work
A question you may hear a lot – how do blue light filters work? Interestingly you are reading this blog on either your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, you are currently being exposed to blue light which is known to be emitted from all digital devices that we are currently using in our day to day life. If you have read some of our previous blogs, you already know that blue light can cause significant long and short-term damage not just to your eyes but to your health as well.
How do blue light filters work?
So, before we answer this question, how do blue light filters work? We need a quick recapitulation of what is blue light. Blue light has a very short wavelength, As a result, it produces a higher amount of energy. If we delve into technical details of it, It has a wavelength of between approximately 380 nm and 500 nm. Thus making it one of the shortest, highest-energy wavelengths.
Blue light is present everywhere around us. When we are outside, light from the sun travels through the atmosphere. The sun is the largest source of blue light. The Blue Light, which has short high energy wavelengths collides with the air molecules causing the light to scatter in every place. In its natural form, our body uses blue light from the sun to regulate our natural sleep and wake cycles. This Cycle is known as circadian rhythm. Other than maintaining the rhythm it also helps boost alertness, elevates mood, increases the feeling of well-being and heightens reaction times.
Artificial sources of blue light include electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop, computers, televisions, etc. Energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs and LED lights are also sources of blue light.
Too much blue light exposure cause eyestrain, headaches, fatigue and sleep problems which will inevitably impact your daily productivity and mood.
Blue light filters work by preventing blue light from reaching the retina. The absence of blue light stimuli on the PRG’s (photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) mimics natural physiological darkness. This in turn causes the SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) to signal the pineal gland to increase melatonin production. As melatonin production increases we feel sleepier than we usually would do and thus shift our phase sleep earlier.
